Uncle arrested for Pakyong teen’s murder

Gangtok, 14 Nov:

Police have arrested 23-year-old Ash Kumar Rai for the rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl in Pakyong, East Sikkim on 08 Nov. The accused admitted to committing the crime during interrogation last night, as per the police.

Briefing the media today, Superintendent of Police, East District, Hari Chettri said that the accused is the paternal uncle of the victim and confessed while being interrogated on Wednesday night.

He informed that the accused was produced in the District Court today and has been remanded to police custody.

“The investigation is not yet complete, so the final charges on him will be framed after the investigation is completed,” said the SP, East.

As of now, the case is registered against the accused under sections 302, 376 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.

Mr. Chettri has congratulated the team of police personnel involved in the investigation of the case.

"The accused did try to destroy evidence and cover up the crime. There were no eye witnesses either so it was a challenging case, but the arrest of the main accused is a big breakthrough,” said SP (East).

It may be mentioned here that on 08 Nov, the victim was found lying unconscious in a nearby forest but was declared brought dead when she was taken to the hospital.

On the other hand, if police sources are to be believed there are other suspects who may be involved in the case but no arrests have been made till now.
