East Dist wins state-level annual sports competition
Gangtok, 15 Nov:
East District emerged the Overall Champion of the state-level Annual Sports Competition held in the capital. South District finished as the runner-up.
The two-day competition was organised by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs and has been inaugurated by Sports & Youth Affairs Minister, Kunga Nima Lepcha, at Paljor Stadium on Thursday.
The closing function of competition had Transport Minister, Sanjit Kharel, as the chief guest accompanied by Rhenock MLA, Bishnu Kumar Khatiwada, as guest of honour among other dignitaries.
East District also lifted the overall championship in athletics, while North became the runners-up team.
In Archery, South District emerged champion with East District coming second. East District won football with North on second place. East emerged champion in Karate as well with West District coming second and East won the TT competition as well with South coming second. East District’s domination continued in taekwondo and South District came second.
In his address, the Minister stated that sports was a priority sector of the SKM government to take and urged youngsters to pursue their disciplines seriously.
Earlier, the function started with a welcome address by SYA Department Director, NK Pradhan.
Sports & Youth Affairs Department Deputy Director [HQ], CL Rai, in turn informed that the department had organised competitions at the block and district levels and finally at the state-level in 10 disciplines.
He informed that 12,636 athletes took part in the block-level competitions, 2,990 in the district-level and finally 375 sportspersons in the state-level.
He informed that shortlisted athletes and teams will be participating in the National School Games and those shortlisted at the National School Games will get a chance in the Khelo India Youth Games 2020 to be held in January.
