Fire destroys two-storied ekra house in Sichey Narrow road and roadside parking obstructs fire perso

Gangtok, 28 Nov:

A major fire incident razed down a two-storied ekra house at Upper Sichey in Gangtok on Thursday morning. However, prompt action by Gangtok Fire Station team controlled the fire in time to prevent it from spreading further. No casualty has been reported in the incident.

Gangtok Fire Station received the fire call at around 10:23 AM today and immediately a team led by Deputy Chief Fire Officer, IK Rai, along with a fire tender rushed to the spot followed by another fire tender a short while later.

It is informed that the fire team found that a two-storied ekra house belonging toBikashChettri situated next to his RCC building in Upper Sichey was engulfed by fire.

Speaking to media persons, Deputy Chief Fire Officer mentioned that two fire tenders and around 20 fire personnel brought the fire under control within 20 minutes of the operation. He added that one gas cylinder exploded in the fire. He informed that around seven families were living in that ekra house as tenants.

The DCFO stated that they are still investigating the cause behind the fire. He mentioned that the house has been completely damaged and loss of property has been estimated at around Rs 5 lakh.

The narrow road and vehicles parked along the roadside made access to the site very difficult, he mentioned.

The administration has arranged a temporary relief shelter with tarpaulins, bamboos and GCI sheets with ration for 3 days for the tenants. For loss of clothing and utensils, the seven tenant families were disbursed ex-gratia as per the standing norms of State Disaster Relief Fund per family which was handed over by the SDM, Gangtok.

Ex-gratia for the house will be disbursed on Friday, it is informed.
