Malling Youth Club celebrated International Mountain Day at the Community Hall here on 11 Dec.
Lachen Mangan MLA, Samdup Lepcha, attended as the chief guest accompanied by Affected Citizen of Teesta general secretary Gyatso Lepcha, PN Lepcha, teachers and SKM party supporters.
During the programme, the ACT general secretary spoke about Mantam landslide and said that the slope collapse occurred due to the poor condition of the soil.
He also highlighted that people of Dzongu have already demanded that the Mines & Geology Department carry out a re-survey in Dzongu and rued that this has not happened yet.
He pointed out that Dzongu had been severely hit by the 2011 Earthquake and added that residents want the remaining hydel projects in Dzongu to be scrapped.
The chief guest, while addressing the gathering, explained the significance of International Mountain Day and how, even though it was being observed for the first time in North Sikkim, the people here have always worshipped mountains.
He also observed that officials had stayed away from the observation and that this was not a good trend.
In the evening, The Diwas Rai Project, an Eastern-Western fusion band from Gangtok, performed at the community hall as part of the day’s events.
