Gangtok, 19 Jan:
The 12th Statistics Olympiad by CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science [AIMSCS], Hyderabad, was held here at Deorali Girls Senior Secondary School on Sunday.
CR Rao AIMSCS is a premier institute of the country and this examination is conducted by the Institute to encourage those with an aptitude for numbers and numerical reasoning.
Gangtok, it is informed, is the only centre for this examination in the entire North East.
The examination was conducted at 27 centres across the country and Sri Lanka with a total of 1,516 students registering for 2 levels [Junior – Class IX & X; Senior – Class XI, XII and Degree 1st Year].
In Sikkim, 100 students registered in the Junior level out of whom 74 took the exam.
To motivate the students, their entry fee was paid by Samagra Shiksha, Education Department.
“Our State has recorded 74% attendance, which is more than the national average of 67%. Out of the 27 centres, Sikkim stood third in participation level after Karim Nagar, AP, and Trivandrum. The exam was in line with the Mathematics and Science Olympiads. Our Students got the first-time exposure to such competitive Scholarship examinations. Though it was winter vacation, the students were found enthusiastic and many of the students felt the exam quite interesting,” an official press release informs.
Students who have scored more than 70% in Mathematics in the preceding year are eligible to take the exam. For Gangtok, Dr U Yugandhar, Director [Management Services], conducted the examination.
