Cong joins condemnation of non-local being appointed OSD to the CM

January 22, 2020

Gangtok, 21 Jan:

Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee [SPCC] president, Bharat Basnet, has strongly condemned the appointment of Sunil Saraogi as Officer on Special Duty [OSD] to the Chief Minister. Contending that the appointment, given that Mr Saraogi is a non-local, was a direct violation of the Old Laws of Sikkim in general and Rule 4(4) in particular, he demanded that the State government immediately repeal its appointment order.

Addressing a press conference here today, the SPCC president alleged that the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha government has been working against promises made before the elections.

He pointed out that SKM had promised a Local Protection Act but was now working against local interests.

He added that the Congress party also strongly condemns such a work culture manifesting in the state government and expressed hope that the State government will correct its mistakes.

Mr Basnet pointed out that SKM, when in the opposition, had launched a strong campaign against the appointment of Anita Gupta as an OSD in the Capacity Building Department and was now following suit.

He went on to share that Advisors to the present CM had earlier advocated for local protection aggressively but now, when they can a difference, were keeping silent.

He also strongly condemned the recent press statement of one Ram Pujan Singh who had claimed that people who have come from Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal have been exempted from Income Tax. He alleged that a member of old settlers community could call the people of Sikkim outsiders due to the weakness of the government.

He went on to counter that the problem of old settlers regarding IT exemption was not a problem of Sikkim and if they have income then they should pay income tax.
