Gangtok, 21 Jan:
Sikkim today launched its T Ao North East Football Championship campaign with a victory. Sikkim downed Assam by a solitary goal in its first match of the league round at IG Stadium in Kohima, Nagaland, on Tuesday.
Don Tshering Lepcha scored the winning goal for Sikkim by converting a penalty shot in the 28th minute of the second half of the match.
Sikkim will be playing its second league match against Meghalaya on 23 January and has been placed in Group-B along with Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram for group stage of the tournament.
Team Manager Arjun Rai credited the squad for having played upto expectations, adding that Sikkim displayed a wonderful game which was highly appreciated by local spectators.
He also made special mention of some good saves by goalkeeper Urgen Pintso Sherpa which helped the team to register its first victory.
Mr Rai said that the team was in good form and a victory on its tournament starter has further boosted the morale.
On behalf of the team, Mr Rai thanked Chief Minister PS Tamang [Golay] for boosting the morale of the team members by extending financial support to the team. He also congratulated the organising committee for organising the tournament in a grand and wonderful manner.
