Sikkim loses finals, wins best goalkeeper and midfielder awards

Sikkim at Dr T Ao North East Football Championship

GANGTOK, 28 Jan:

Sikkim’s dream to lift the champion’s trophy of the prestigious Dr T Ao North East Football Championship crashed once again when it went down to Mizoram by a lone goal in the contesting final match of the tournament played at IG Stadium in Kohima, Nagaland on Tuesday evening.

Sikkim was playing the finals of this prestigious tournament for the third time but it has to again console itself with the runners-up trophy in the 9th edition of the tournament.

The first half of the match ended in a goalless draw. Both teams missed some good opportunities to take an early lead in the second half.

In the meanwhile, David Lalrinmuana scored the only and winning goal for Mizoram in the 75th minute. Sikkim players responded with a tough fight but could not score any goal in the match.

Sikkim received the runners-up trophy and cash prize of Rs 6 lakh.

Sikkim’s goalkeeper, Urgen Pintso Sherpa was adjudged Best Goalkeeper of the tournament and Sikkim’s midfielder, Kilp Namgyal Barfungpa received the Best Midfielder trophy.

Sikkim team manager, Arjun Rai expressed that the state team played very hard in the entire match but could not score any goal despite of its wonderful performance. He also thanked local spectators for supporting the team throughout the match.
