Month-long Winter Sports Coaching Camp concludes

GANGTOK, 31 Jan:

The valedictory function of Winter Coaching Camp was held here at Paljor Stadium on Friday morning. The month-long coaching camp, which was started on 05 January, in different sports disciplines was organized by Sports & Youth Affairs Department.

The valedictory function had Forest Minister, Karma Loday Bhutia as the chief guest accompanied by the Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Jacob Khaling as the guest of honour.

The function also witnessed demonstration of skills and knowledge by young children learnt during the camp. The chief guest and guest of honour handed over certificates to participants and also interacted with children in the camp.

In his address, the chief guest expressed that sports and games is a good medium to engage children in healthy and productive activities. He congratulated parents for sending their children to the camp to encourage them in sports and fitness.

The Minister stated that sports would help to inculcate leadership and confidence in children. He urged children to continue with sports not only to stay fit and healthy but also be a good citizen of the society. However, he stressed that sports and education must go together.

Likewise, the guest of honour expressed that sports was the priority sector of the State government and has been working for the development of sports and betterment of sports persons in the State. He stated that the government has been working for infrastructure development and providing coaching and exposure to local sportspersons of the State.

Mr Khaling expressed that this coaching camp was a good start to take Sikkim sports to a new dimension. He congratulated the department of Sports & Youth Affairs for organizing such camp for children and further thanked parents for sending and accompanying their children throughout the coaching camp.

Earlier, Secretary to Sports & Youth Affairs Department, KuberBhandari thanked the State government for reviving the sports activities across the State. He mentioned that the department has been gearing up to organize Girls football league from March in the State and Inter-Gram Panchayat Unit sports activities in different sports discipline to bring sports culture in the rural part.

Mr Bhandari informed that on the direction of the CM the talent hunt in different sports disciplines have been started in the State and will continue to bring out talented sports persons from the State. He encouraged children to continue with sports to stay healthy and fit.
