Sopakha GPU villagers put their foot down, demand resumption of abandoned road project
Gangtok, 17 Feb:
Residents of several villages under Sopakha Gram Panchayat Unit under Maneybong-Dentam constituency in West Sikkim have demanded for the early completion of a 4 KM road from Bandukey-Uttarey road to Daragaon via Dhadeygaon.
It is informed that this road has been lying incomplete for the past year, work abandoned barely 30% into the project.
The villagers are now threatening to launch a “strong movement” from 20 February onwards if the contractor does not resume work by then.
Regarding the same, residents of Dhadeygaon, Daragaon, Gurung Gaon, Majhgaon and Khopikharka Gaon met the panchayats of Sopakha GPU on Monday and requested them to initiate effective measures in this regard.
It is informed that the panchayats have directed the concerned contractor, Suk Prasad Limboo, to resume the work by 19 February.
People have threatened to take their protest to the highest authorities if this deadline is not kept.
They have also threatened to launch a strong movement from 20 February onwards if they do not see the work resumed.
The people complain that a JCB has been left untouched at Dhadeygaon for the past eight months and the concerned department has also not shown any concern on the matter.
