Director General of Sikkim Police, A Shankar Rao, has appealed to the people of Sikkim to cooperate to ensure complete success of the lockdown to fight COVID-19. He has appealed that the people remain at home and reinforce this fight.
Speaking to media persons here this evening, the DGP stressed that COVID-19 was a serious threat to mankind and its existence.
He added that the State government has been taking a series of measures to combat this massive epidemic and mentioned how initially Inner Line Permits were suspended and subsequently local tourists as well banned from entering Sikkim and a number of shops and establishments have been closed save essential commodities.
“We appeal to the people of Sikkim to remain at home and fight COVID-19. Any violation of the lockdown will be seriously dealt with under sections of the IPC and NDMA, which includes rigorous imprisonment of upto six months for violating the lockdown provisions,” the DGP said.
He added that unnecessary movement will not be tolerated by the police and strict action will be taken against those violating the lockdown provisions.
However, he added that general public can go to purchase essential commodities like food and medicines.
He stated that the Section 144 has been imposed in the entire State and gathering of more than four persons will lead to prosecution.
“I appeal to the entire people of Sikkim to fully cooperate to ensure the complete success of lockdown and fight against the COVID-19,” he added.
He mentioned that there were three options for the people - stay at home or stay in hospital or in photo frames.
