Incessant rain over the past few days has taken its toll in North Sikkim, especially some parts of Kabi-Lungtsog constituency, where a lady was killed in a landslide triggered above her village, Lingchom, at around 12:30 pmon Sunday.
57-year-old Phu Phu Lhamu Sherpa along with her family had taken shelter in a neighbour's house after the first landslide tore very close to her home and washed away the toilet this morning.
Unfortunately, the second landslide struck the house they were sheltering in and claimed her life. The house, belonging to Passang Sherpa, also suffered substantial damage and also injured the deceased person’s daughter-in-law, Lakpa Doma Sherpa, and Bhaichung Sherpa of the same village who had rushed to the landslide hit house to rescue the occupants.
The villagers along with the ward panchayat recovered the dead body from the spot.
DC North, TT Kaleon, area MLA Karma Loday Bhutia, SDM Kabi along with BDO and SHO Phodong Police Station visited the spot to take the stock of damages.
Meanwhile, the two injured persons have been rushed to STNM Hospital, Gangtok, for treatment.
The landslide has also blocked the Gangtok-Mangan road at Phensong and at another spot near Kabi.
The approach road leading to Upper Lingchom, about 4 kms from the Mangan-Gangtok highway, has been rendered inaccessible due to the landslide at several spots.
