Sikkim is gearing up to pay rich tribute to 20 martyred soldiers who recently lost their lives in a skirmish with Chinese soldiers at Galwan Valley in Eastern Ladakh.
The State government has announced plans to organize, ‘Veeron ko Naman’ [Salute to the Brave], on 25 June here at MG Marg.
Speaking to media persons, Chief Secretary SC Gupta explained that the main purpose of the event was to give a strong message of patriotism to the nation and the world community that the Sikkimese people were standing with soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country.
He mentioned that people from all walks of life will assemble at MG Marg on Thursday evening maintaining social distancing norms. He mentioned that some Union Ministers are also likely to address the people on the occasion through a live video feed.
The CS mentioned that a candlelight vigil will also be held and that people invited to use flashlights of their mobile phones as a symbolic gesture.
He mentioned that the people who are not in Gangtok can join the event from their respective places.
Political Secretary to the CM, Jacob Khaling, added that although Sikkim was the smallest State of the country, it will always stand on the frontline for the protection of the country.
He informed that the proposed event was being held on the initiative of Chief Minister PS Tamang [Golay] and that the entire State machinery was working to ensure a grand success.
It is informed that on the occasion, Sikkim Police will present ‘Shok Shastra Shraddhanjali’, a special drill as a mark of respect and tribute to the Martyrs, followed by a two-minute silence.
