Two more returnees have tested positive for COVID-19 taking the tally of active cases in Sikkim to 46. One 21-year-old woman from South Sikkim and a 49-year-old man from East Sikkim have tested positive for COVID-19.
In his daily health bulletin on Thursday, Health Department DG-cum-Secretary, DrPempa T Bhutia mentioned that these two new cases of COVID-19 were detected during testing of 179 sampleson Wednesday.
While giving details of the two new patients, the Secretary informed that the 21-year-old woman had returned from Bihar on 12 June and was placed in a facility quarantine at SICB, Jorethang. He mentioned that following some doubts about her earlier test, a second test was conducted on Wednesday where she tested positive.
Dr Bhutia mentioned that the 49-year-old man was GREF worker who had travelled from Etawah, Uttar Pradesh to Delhi in a special train and then boarded a flight from Delhi to Bagdogra on 14 June. He further travelled from Siliguri to Gangtok in a transit bus of GREF on 15 June.
He added that the patient travelled with four others in the transit bus, two of whom were dropped at the GREF camp at Martam while one person along with the patient had got off at the GREF camp at Swastik.
The Secretary informed that during testing of three workers at Swastik camp, the patient tested positive while the other two tested negative. He further added that samples of the two GREF workers at Martam camp will be sent for testing on Friday.
Meanwhile, two direct contacts of the 49-year-old, the driver and nursing assistant who travelled with him in the GREF transit bus have also been sent for quarantine and will be tested within seven days.
Total number of COVID-19 positive cases registered so far in the State is 85, in which 39 have been discharged and there are 46 active cases in the state. At present, 32 patients are admitted in the isolation ward of STNM hospital, 9 in isolation ward at Samdruptse in South Sikkim and 5 in isolation ward at Kyongsa in West Sikkim.
