High Court intervention redresses Chungthang-Lachen connectivity woes

Gangtok, 25 Jun:

Difficulties faced by people after a bailey suspension bridge on the Chungthang-Lachen axis was washed away last year, has been relieved following the intervention of the High Court of Sikkim which led to the Border Roads Organization constructing a new 360 feet Bailey Suspension Bridge at the Prakash Setu site for movement of up to Class 24 Ton vehicles.

The division bench of the High Court headed by Chief Justice Arup Kumar Goswami and including Justice Bhaskar Raj Pradhan observed that since the problem has been solved, there was no need to continue with the Public Interest Litigation it had taken up based on a complaint letter received by it from the Pipons of Lachen Dzumsa.

The new bridge was completed on 28 March earlier this year and has been in operation since, the Court was informed. The older bridge had been washed away on 17 June last year.
