Gangtok, 05 Jul:
Upper Burtuk MLA, DR Thapa, convened a meeting for his constituency today to explore how dairy, poultry, goat rearing and piggery farms can be promoted there to cater to the demands of Gangtok. The meeting was organized in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Department.
In his address, Mr Thapa stressed that Upper Burtuk used to be earlier cater to Gangtok’s dairy, poultry and mutton requirements and it was time to rejuvenate this sector in more meaningful way.
More than 100 farmers from different areas participated in the counselling session organised by the MLA to assist them with technical and other support.
The farmers shared their views and sought support in marketing, feed supplies and delivery mechanisms.
Director, Animal husbandry, Dr BN Chettri, shared tips on hygiene and feeding aspects of cows, goats and piggery and how the farmers can earn better from this sector.
He said that the Govt of India was focusing on the animal husbandry and livestock sector and investing Rs 15,000 crore as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission and providing easy loans.
Resource person from NABARD, Bikash Pradhan spoke on the demand and supply chains, importance of local production and supply after COVID-19 outbreak and self employment opportunities.
