Dr Susan Rai, Daughter of Parsuram Rai and Meena Kumari Rai, of Mamley, Namchi, South Sikkim has successfully defended her PhD Thesis titled “Democracy, Political Participation and Women: A Study of Sikkim” on 10 Aug, 2020 from the Department of Political Science under the supervision of Associate Professor and Head, Dr Durga Prasad Chhetri, Department of Political Science. She is the first research scholar to complete PhD from the Department of Political Science, Sikkim University. She has completed her schooling from Ranka Sr Sec School and Namchi Girls Sr Sec School and Graduation and Post-graduation from Namchi Government College and Sikkim University respectively.
Her thesis explored on debates pertaining to democracy and political participation of women in Sikkim, specifically dealt in a post-merger political setting. It also iscussed the concept of democratising democracy and positive discrimination directed towards inclusion of women in political process through reservation policies. The study explored the political participation and representation of women in legislative assembly in the state of Sikkim and local governmental bodies both rural and urban.
She has presented her papers in several national and international seminars/conferences. She has also published her research papers in several reputed journals.
Presently, Dr Susan Rai is working as an Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Sikkim Government College, Gyalshing.
