Various places under Yangtey GPU have been severely hit by major landslides triggered by incessant rain this year leaving many households of GPU in precarious condition and possible threats of collapse.
At first, Minister Bhim Hang Subba visited the landslide affected site below Yangtey Sasastra Sima Bal (SSB). Massive landslides at higher reaches of Yangtey near SSB camp have put the villagers below in acute danger. Debris and muds accumulated above the village pose the risk of flash flood if not cleared or moved to a safer place. The villagers have demanded immediate clearance of mud and slush from the area citing that further flash flood cannot be denied if rain continues. Bhim Hang Subba directed the departmental officials to find immediate solutions in regard to clearance of debris from the site and protective wall construction to be initiated at the site. Subba reached out to landslide affected villagers of lower Yangtey. The villagers placed their grievances and sought necessary action from the state government for mitigation of problems being faced by the villagers.
Later, Subba visited landslide affected places of Lower Bhaluthang and Lower Omlok. It may be mentioned here that flash flood in Lodung river has caused massive landslips at lower areas of Lower Bhaluthang and Lower Omlok. Some houses have suffered damages in landslides. People have lost their cultivable lands and many households are facing risk being displaced in landslides. Minister Bhim Hang Subba directed the government officials to assess the damages and loss suffered by people in landslides. He maintained that a proper plan should be made to resettle the villagers affected in natural calamity and assured all help from the state goverment to the villagers affected in landslides. He advised the government officials, panchayat members of concerned GPU to prepare detailed reports and submit the same to higher authority.
"A proper assessment of damages happened in natural calamity and effective plans will be finalised from protection of villages from further devastations. The state government will take required actions to help out the affected families to overcome the loss suffered in natural calamity", Bhim Hang Subba said.
Some locals of Lower Omlok alleged that underground tunnel constructed by SHIGA power project limited was the reason behind continuous landslides in lower areas of Omlok. They say that lower Omlok is gradually sinking and landslides have been rampant putting the entire area on the verge of submersion.
"We are living in fear of being swept away by landslides. We want some constructive initiative from the concerned department for restoration of damaged villages. We have suffered a great loss in landslides", a local from Lower Omlok Said.
A major portion of road constructed by SHIGA power Ltd has been swept by landslide near Lodung River and villages located above are facing possible threat of lands sink.
