CM announces sports quota hike in govt jobs from 2% to 5%
Gangtok, 29 Aug:
Chief Minister PS Tamang [Golay], today announced an enhancement in the sports quota for government employment from the existing 2% to 5%. He made the announcement while addressing a state-wide National Sports Day event via webinar from Namchi.
The CM also made a series of announcements to promote sports club culture in the State, bring out more sports talents from all corners of the State and policy interventions to groom and promote them at the national and international levels.
National Sports Day marks the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand andis observed on 29 August every year. Maj Dhyan Chand led India to three Olympics gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936.
Speaking at the National Sports Day function organised by the Sports & Youth Affairs Department at DAC Namchi in South Sikkim on Saturday, the CM addressed events being held simultaneously at NIC Gangtok in East Sikkim, Gyalshing in West Sikkim and Mangan in North Sikkim.
On the occasion, the CM also announced annual cash incentives to affiliated sports association in the State on the basis of their performance to promote sports club culture in the State.
He announced that inter-house sports competitions will be made compulsory in every government and private school and assured that inter-school sports competitions will be launched as well.
He mentioned that the government will also launch a talent hunt programme and then groom the sportspersons picked at these camps at properly appointed sports academies.
He also announced training and exposure trips for coaches within and outside the State and rural sports on a regular basis in the State. He directed the concerned department to immediately work out on all announcements.
The CM paid rich homage to the late Major Dhyan Chand and remembered his contributions to the nation on the occasion of the National Sports Day. He also expressed gratitude towards former and present sportspersons of Sikkim for their contribution to the State and the nation.
He shared that sports being a priority sector, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha government has been continuously working to promote and develop sports in the State to make Sikkim a healthy and sporting State.
He stated that the State government was also working for the betterment of the sportspersons to take them to the national and international levels by providing them better sports infrastructure and facilities.
The CM mentioned that this year the celebration was being held on a scaled down level due to the COVID-19 pandemic and assured that next year, National Sports Day will be celebrated in a grand manner by inviting gathering all sportspersons of the State at the same venue and honoring them.
“We do not want to engage youth just in sporting activities but want to also support and encourage them to become professional sportspersons eventually,” he said.
While highlighting that a lot more needs to be done in the sports sector in the State, he urged sportspersons here to come forward with suggestions for the development of sports and betterment of sportspersons.
He assured that the SKM government will fulfill all promises made in its election manifesto in the field of sports.
Earlier, Minister to Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Kunga Nima Lepcha spoke about the various initiatives taken by the government in providing better infrastructure and facilities and opportunities to sportspersons in the State.
He mentioned that the department was also providing cash incentives to meritorious sportspersons to further encourage them and mentioned that the government was also working for the upgradation of stadiums and playgrounds and towards creating new infrastructure and facilities.
He mentioned that the department has also been organizing online sports training and competition during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The department also felicitated coaches and presented cash incentives to meritorious sportspersons in different disciplines.
At the main function held at DAC Namchi, the CM felicitated football coaches Suren Chettri and Palden Bhutia with Letters of Appreciation. Likewise, boxing coach, Sandhya Gurung, athletic coaches, Ram Bahadur Subba and Narchung Bhutia, strength lifting coach, Pema Dorjee Bhutia and archery coach Pujan Rai were also felicitated at NIC Gangtok.
Cash incentives were also presented to meritorious sportspersons Evan Thapa in football, Pempa Tshering Sherpa in weight lifting, Regyal Tamang in football and Rinchen Ongmu Bhutia in basketball.
On the occasion, the CM also released a book, “Biography of first generation of eminent sports personalities of Sikkim,” and the annual report of Sports & Youth Affairs Department 2019-20.
