2-day-old baby beats COVID on a day when 49 more test positive

Gangtok, 20 Sept:

The fog of worry wafting through Sikkim with COVID deaths almost every day of late was lifted to some extent with the heartwarming news that a two-day-old baby who had tested COVID-positive on 12 September earlier this month has beaten the virus and returned home.

This update was however the only uplifting news for Sikkim which continues to grapple with infections even among “VIPs” and containment orders becoming so frequent that most people are not even keeping track any more. There was also one more COVID-casualty reported today when a 54-year-old male from Chongey near Gangtok, who was admitted to STNM Hospital on 02 September, passed away at around 7 AM this morning. The patient had co-morbid conditions of diabetes, chronic kidney disease and renal failure.

Today, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in Sikkim so far increased to 2,391 with 49 new cases recorded in the 24 hours ending 8 AM Sunday. South took over from East district today, cornering most of the new cases.

Of the 49 new cases, 11 were reported from East District, one from West District and 37 from South District, 30 of which were from Jorethang.

The number of active novel coronavirus cases in the State now stands at 469.

Meanwhile, with three patients discharged from isolation facilities yesterday, the number of people discharged from covid care centres and the isolation wards at hospitals has risen to 1,894.

In the daily health bulletin on Sunday evening, Health Department State IEC Officer, Sonam G Bhutia mentioned that 45 new cases COVID-19 positive were detected in the testing of 314 samples by RT-PCR at VRD Lab in STNM hospital on Saturday. He added that two of 12 samples tested by TrueNat were found positive for COVID-19, while two other new cases of COVID-19 positive were reported in the rapid antigen testing of 28 samples.

While giving break-up of new cases found in RT-PCR testing, he informed that 37 new cases have been reported from South District including six staff of Jorethang CHC and six from Chisopani and one police personnel from Melli.

Likewise, one person from near Lepcha garage on Bye-Pass Road-Gangtok, one from near PHSC Kopibari, three primary contacts from the containment zone in Development Area, one from PNG Road, one from Deorali Road and one from Kingstone, Rhenock were also found positive in RT-PCR testing.

He informed that one person from Daragaon, Tadong and a 23-year-old female from Bojoghari, who could not be contacted over phone to be informed of her test results, were found positive for COVID-19 in TrueNat testing.

Mr Bhutia informed that a person from Mandir area in Bojoghari and a person from Sombaria in West Sikkim were found positive in the rapid antigen testing.
