Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) to conduct virtual Convocation ceremony this year due to COVID-19 pandemic

Gangtok, 25 Sept: The 20th Convocation ceremony of SMU will be held virtually on 26 Sept, 2020, keeping in mind the safety of students and the COVID-19 guidelines in place.

This Convocation is a momentous milestone in the history of SMU to celebrate the academic and professional accomplishments of the outgoing students in various multi-disciplinary graduates, post graduate and PhD programmes.

While we understand the importance of celebrating the remarkable achievements and hard work of our alumnus in reaching this significant milestone, our traditional convocation ceremonies are not possible because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, in place of in-person ceremonies, the University will host a virtual Convocation ceremony.

This is the first time in 20 years of its history that SMU will hold a virtual convocation ceremony where students collected their degrees on virtual reality mode. It has been the earnest endeavours of SMU facilitate maximum online participation in this important annual event which will be live- streamed.

Approximately, 900 students from the MBBS, MD, MS, BTech, MTech, BSc & MSc Nursing, Bachelors & masters in Physiotherapy, Biotechnology & Business Administration, BCA, MCA, MSc Physics, Chemistry, mathematics and PhD Course in various disciplines will be conferred their degrees as they join the virtual platform.

Governor of Sikkim, Ganga Prasad, who is also the Chancellor of SMU, will preside over the function and address the students, faculty, staff and management via video conference. The chief guest for the event is Senior Vice-President, Abhay Kumar Vaish, Head of Business Unit MS IT & ADM, Ericsson Global India, who will also deliver the Convocation address also via video conference. The entire event will be webcast for the students, alumni and public viewing through all virtual media platforms.
