West teachers trained as Health & Wellness Ambassadors

The four-day online training programme for school teachers of 103 State Government Schools, 2 Central Government funded Schools and 1 NGO run School of West Sikkim(Aspirational District) was jointly organized by Population Education Cell-SCERT, Education Department and Rashtriya Kishore SwasthyaKaryakram (RKSK) unit of Health Department, Government of Sikkim from 28th September to 1st October 2020.

The programme to train two teachers as Health and Wellness Ambassadors from each School of selected districts from all over the country was jointly launched by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India during the month of February under the aegis of ongoingAyushman Bharat Programme.

The objective of the programme is to provide comprehensive knowledge, psychological support and services to school going children related to health and well-being to enhance their growth, development and educational achievements.

These trained Health and Wellness Ambassadors will create a support group of students in their respective schools who will serve as ''Health and Wellness Messengers''. They jointly will spread awareness regarding preventive health by organizing appropriate activity sessions of one hour every week in their respective schools to promote joyful and healthy learning.

For the state of Sikkim, a State Resource Group (SRG) of 16 members comprising of faculty members from SCERT and DIET, School Heads and officials from State Education and Health Department has been trained by the National Resource Group. The curriculum and training materials for this programme is prepared by NCERT in consultation with Union Ministries of Health and Education, Government of India.

The modules include eleven themes - emotional and mental wellbeing, gender equality, interpersonal relationships, nutrition, prevention and management of substance misuse, health and sanitation, reproductive health and HIV prevention, promotion of safe use of the internet, media and social media and security against violence and injuries.

The said training programme was inaugurated by Shri. G. P. Upadhayaya, Additional Chief Secretary, Education Department, Government of Sikkim on 28th Sept, 2020 in the presence of Dr. TsetenYamphel, Principal Director cum Mission Director (NHM-Sikkim), Dr. Rabin Chhetri, Director SCERT and other officials.

The group of 212 teachers selected as Health and Wellness Ambassadors were divided into three groups and training sessions were conducted simultaneously in online mode. Each group was trained by separate group of SRG members headed by Dr. MahendraTamang of SCERT-Sikkim, Rajesh Thapa, HM of Langang Sec School and TashiOngyal, HM of Gyangyap Secondary School.

The online technical support team was headed by Rajiv Philips of SCERT-Sikkim and the whole programme was coordinated by Ms.RanjuPradhan, AsstProf.and Head of Population Education Cell of SCERT and Dr. SimmyRasaily, Additional Director (RKSK), Health Department at the State level.

Dr. MahendraTamang of SCERT and Ms.SwarnalataPradhan of DIET Geyzing coordinated the programme at the district level.

During the closing day, the participants were addressed by Dr. Rabin Chhetri, Director, SCERT-Sikkim, Dr. Phumzey Bhutia, Director (RCH) Department of Health and K. C. Gyatsho, Additional Director (Education), West District and Ms RanjuPradhan. The programme also had the presence of Joint Directors, faculty members from SCERT and DIETs, State Resource Group Members, technical team members, heads of the institutions and heads of ten BRCs and trainee- participants teachers of West Sikkim. The teachers have expressed their gratitude to the organizing agency for building their capacity in an important sector and also assured for proper implementation of the programme at the school level.
