Arrested Siliguri kingpin of MBBS admission con cheated people of Rs 3 crore: Sikkim Police

GANGTOK, 12 Oct: Another big breakthrough for Crime Branch & CID [CB&CID] branch of Sikkim Police with the arrested of the main accused in a case of fraud and admission racket related Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences from Siliguri in West Bengal. It is informed that the case was in the progress since 2015 and the case was registered in Sadar Thana and CB&CID of Sikkim Police.

CB&CID of Sikkim Police has arrested Sumantra Gupta on Sunday who has been cheating the people with the promise to get them admission in the Sikkim Manipal University. It has also been informed that the said accused has also been involved in the case related to fraud, child trafficking and other crimes.

Addressing a press conference here this afternoon, Superintendent of Police CB&CID, Tenzing Loden Lepcha mentioned that while investigating the case, a team of CB&CID of Sikkim Police has arrested the accused from Siliguri on Sunday. He added that the accused was involved in the admission racket case related to SMIMS. He further added that a team of Sikkim Police has arrested the accused with the help of police officials of Bhaktinagar Police Station of West Bengal police.

Additional SP [CB&CID] Rinzing Chopel, who is also the investigating officer of the case, mentioned that there were more than 40 cases were registered against the accused who has already duped around three crores of rupees of the people. He informed that the police have kept the accused in five days police remand of the interrogation. ASP mentioned that that the accused has been cheating the people by introduced himself as the Dean of SMIMS and assured them to give admission in the institute. He mentioned that the police have been investigating the case related to fraud, cheating and other crimes.

It is informed that the police have seized 31 sim cards, laptop, brand new vehicle and his mobile phone and the police have already started the process to freeze all bank accounts of the accused. The police have registered the cases with sections of 419, 420, 468, 471, 120B of IPC and C & D of Section 66 of IT Act against the accused.

The team has been comprised of ASP Rinzing Chopel, PI Abhishek Dahal, Lance Naik Sanjay Subba of the investigation.
