SRM University Sikkim celebrates World Tourism Day, 2020

The School of Hospitality & Management, SRM University Sikkim, under the stewardship of the Associate Dean, Basic Sciences, Dr Govind Pratap Singh, celebrated World Tourism Day 2020 on 13 October. The theme of the event was ‘Tourism and Rural Development’. Delivering the keynote address at the two-hour event, Vice Chancellor, Prof Ch Satish Kumar said that most of the sites which draw tourists fall in rural neighbourhoods and emphasized the need to develop ancillary sites to improve footfall and tourists’ comfort. Associate Professor, Prof Prashant Kumar Gautam, University Institute of Hotel & Tourism Management, Punjab University, delivered a special lecture on the occasion which ranged widely to make important points on how tourism impacts rural development in the hilly states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Prof Gautam also described the interventions which are needed to alleviate the adverse effects of the pandemic on the tourism sector. Award-winning mountain biker, Asim Sharma and restaurateur, Titus Rai, both students of the HTM department, were also felicitated at the event.
