Sikkim’s COVID to reaches 60 even as an 85 –year-old beats nCoV after month and a half

GANGTOK, 18 Oct: Sikkim’s COVID-19 related death toll has reached 60 as a 78-years-old elderly person from Upper Burtuk in East District died with comorbidities here on Saturday. He was diagnosed with severe pneumonitis and respiratory distress syndrome and had the comorbid condition of diabetic and hypertension.

In the daily health bulletin on Sunday, Health Department State IEC Officer, Sonam G Bhutia mentioned that he was tested positive for COVID-19 on 16 October and was immediately shifted to STNM hospital and later admitted in the ICU facility. However, he added that the patient passed away at around 3:30 PM last afternoon.

While sharing the recovery of an elderly person, he mentioned that an 85-years-old person, who was fighting against the novel coronavirus since one and a half month, has finally defeated novel coronavirus and returned home following his negative report. He informed that the patient was admitted in ICU many times during his stay in the hospital but finally recovered fully.

In the meantime, 30 fresh cases of novel coronavirus have been reported in the State in the last 24 hours taking the tally of the confirmed cases of COVID-19 to 3597. At the same time, 32 more patients were discharged from isolation facilities on Saturday to improve the figure of discharged patients of COVID-19 in Sikkim to 3184. With these there are now 272 active cases of novel coronavirus in the State, of whom three were currently admitted in the ICU facility of STNM hospital.

In the RT-PCR testing at VRD Lab in STNM hospital on Saturday, 22 of 118 samples were returned positive for COVID-19, while two more new cases detected in TrueNat testing of 17 samples and six more persons were found positive for COVID-19 in the rapid antigen testing of 40 samples.

While giving the details of new cases found in RT-PCR testing, Mr Bhutia informed that one person from Martam, one from Masjid area in Upper Arithang, two from near government college in Tadong, two from the containment zone below Rongneck School in Chandmari, two from Daragaon Tadong, one from Pani House and from the housing colony near new STNM hospital were tested COVID-19 positive. Likewise, one from Golitar Singtam, one from Rorathang, one from Tarpin, two from Rhenock, two from Salghari, one from Rorathang, one from Aritar and one health staff from Rangpo were also reported positive for COVID-19 in RT-PCR testing. He informed that one 40-years-old female from Krishi Bhawan in Tadong and one 72-years-old female from Chandmari, who were also tested positive for COVID-19 in RT-PCR, were not traceable over the numbers given by them during the testing. He urged both to contact the concerned authority.

Mr Bhutia informed that one person from Arithang and one from Pakyong were also reported COVID-19 positive in TrueNat testing.

Similarly, one person from Bojoghari, one staff of Central Referral Hospital, Tadong, one from Pani House, one from Bermiok in South District, one from near new STNM hospital and one from Makha were also found positive for COVID-19 in the rapid antigen testing, he added.
