Sikkim COVID-related death-toll climbs to 73; Total cases rise to 3,958

Sikkim reported one more COVID-19 related death on Sunday with the Health Department confirming that a 75-year-old male from Pakyong in East District passing away at the Emergency Ward of STNM Hospital on Saturday and his test results returning positive. With this, COVID-19 has now claimed 73 lives in Sikkim.

There appears to be some confusion over the dates in this case with a video circulating online of the departed person’s family stating that the death occurred on 30 October but the test report recording the date of sample collection as 31 October and the family being intimated about the COVID-positive result only on Sunday, two days after the person had passed away.

In the daily health bulletin on Sunday, Health Department State IEC Officer, Sonam G Bhutia stated that the patient was brought to the emergency ward and passed away there shortly after at around 11AM on Saturday. He informed that the cremation of the patient was conducted as per the required COVID-19 protocols.

In the meantime, Sikkim’s tally of the confirmed COVID-19 cases increased to 3,958 with the detection of 18 fresh cases of novel coronavirus in the State in the last 24 hours.

On the other hand, 34 more patients were discharged from facility and home isolation on Saturday taking the figure of discharged COVID-19 patients in Sikkim to 3,569. There are still 234 patients still in hospital or home isolation, of whom four are currently in the ICU ward of STNM hospital.

The 18 new cases were detected from testing of 133 samples on Saturday.

RT-PCR testing of 89 samples returned 12 positive results while one new case was picked up in TruNat testing of 10 samples and five samples screened via Rapid Antigen Testing came back positive.

16 of the new cases have been reported from East District and two from South Sikkim.

In RT-PCR testing, one person from 6th Mile Tadong, one from Sakyong, Upper Bhaluthang in West District, one from Tathangchen, two from Greendale School Road in Tadong, two from the containment zone in Tadong, one from Ranipool, one from the containment zone in DPH Area, Gangtok, one from Pakyong, one from Dhadgaon, Singtam and one from near the Taxi Stand in Middle Lingding were found positive for COVID-19.

One patient currently admitted in the Gynecological ward at STNM Hospital was found positive in TruNat testing.

Likewise, one person from Phewa Basti in Tadong, one nursing staff member of Central Referral Hospital, and one from near Tadong Senior Secondary School in East District and two from housing colony in Kazitar, Namchi in South District were found positive for nCoV in rapid antigen testing.
