SSACS to organize state-level quiz contest for World AIDS Day

GANGTOK, 03 Nov:

Sikkim State AIDS Control Society [SSACS] is organizing a state-level quiz competition, ‘The HIV+ IQ’ for colleges, senior secondary and secondary schools on the occasion of the World AIDS Day 2020.

SSACS is organizing the quiz competition with the tagline, ‘Together we fight the taboo and make Sikkim an AIDS Free State’ in coordination with Education Department and Gangtok-based event management company, 24hours Inspired. Amid this COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers have decided to conduct the quiz completion through online-mode.

Addressing a press conference here today, Project Director SSACS, Dr DS Kerongi mentioned that a total of 480 cases of HIV/AIDS have been registered here at ART Centre so far since 2005. He informed that among them 212 persons are undergoing ART treatment and 108 have died.

“It is a matter of great concern that 409 of 480 cases so far fall under the age group of 20 to 49 years, which is 85% of the total cases, so if our productive age group gets affected like this then it would obstruct the development of Sikkim. So we have been working mainly on this vulnerable group of adolescent and youth in every HIV/AIDS prevention programme,” he said.

He informed that Red Ribbon Clubs have also been working among adolescents and youth in different schools of the State.

Dr Kerongi informed that this quiz competition is also a component of the Annual Action Plan 2020-21 with the main target of creating more awareness and education among students on HIV/AIDS, adolescent and mental health and related issues.

24hours Inspired software engineer, Deepak Tamang informed that 60 institutions have already registered for the competition and 90 are likely to join the quiz competition. He informed that two students each would represent their respective institute in the quiz competition.

The online quiz competition in the district-level will be held on 09 November, in which a link of questions would be sent to the participating schools with timing of around 30 seconds to solve each question. Top two teams from each district will participate in the semi-finals and grand finale to be held on 12 November.

The semi-final rounds and grand finale would be recorded and telecast through Samvaad Television on the occasion of the World AIDS Day which falls on 01 December, informed Mr Tamang. He added that the winner of the quiz competition will represent Sikkim in the regional level quiz competition.

SSACS Assistant Director mentioned that the top three winners in the state level competition would be provided cash prizes and all participating teams would get certificates. He thanked the Education Department for their support for the competition.
