3 fresh Covid cases, all patients in Sikkim asymptomatic or only moderately ill

Sikkim’s string of no new cases punctuated occasionally by days when solitary cases were picked up, was broken today with three fresh cases being recorded in the last 24 hours at a daily test positivity rate of 2.5% from the screening of 116 samples.

As per the Daily Report of Covid019 in Sikkim released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of Health Department, all the three cases were detected in RT-PCR testing and registered in East Sikkim. Until these three cases were recorded, Sikkim had gone four consecutive days without any new cases.

Sikkim’s tally of confirmed cases recorded since testing began here over two years back has accordingly inched up to 39,157.

There are now four Covid patients in Sikkim, of whom two are admitted in hospital, one of them admitted shortly after testing positive yesterday.

In reassuring news for those who have been following Sikkim’s Covid numbers, the one patient who had been in ICU for the past few days was shifted to the regular Covid ward yesterday after his symptoms were brought under control.

Significantly, Sikkim has not seen a Covid death for a month and a half now. The last Covid fatality here was recorded on 27 March. Sikkim has lost 452 lives to the virus thus far.

Meanwhile, on the vaccination front, Sikkim administered 1,338 doses of CorBEvax vaccine to children aged between 12 to 14 years, 229 taking the first dose while 1,109 completed their vaccination schedule with the second dose yesterday. 11,338 of this age-group estimated to number around 26,000 have taken both doses of the vaccine. First dose coverage at 17,720 works out to 67.27%.

Among those aged between 15 to 18 years, 139 doses of Covaxinwere administered yesterday, 32 taking their first shots and 107 completing their vaccination schedule with the second dose. A little over 72% of this segment is now fully vaccinated while 91% have first dose coverage.

Among the adults, 50 doses of Covishield were administered yesterday, four first doses and 46 second dose. Nearly 96% of the adults have completed their vaccination schedule with both doses.

The precautionary third does was administered to 61 people yesterday.
