3 new Covid cases and two recoveries in Sikkim

After a hiatus of nearly ten days of having no Covid cases, Sikkim, for the past week, has been recording a steady trickle of new cases. As per the Daily Report of Covid-19 in Sikkim released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of Health Department, three more infections were recorded here in the past 24 hours at a daily test positivity rate of 3.1%. The average test positive rate for the past seven days works out to 2% and both these numbers pale when compared to the cumulative test positivity rate of 11.5% for the past two years.

Thethree new cases, all registered in East Sikkim, were picked up from the screening of 97 samples. While all the 57 samples screened via RT-PCR returned negative, of the 40 put through Rapid Antigen Testing, three returned positive.

Sikkim also recorded two new recoveries among Covid patients in the last 24 hours and currently has 13 active cases of Covid. Of these 13, five are down with symptoms severe enough to require hospitalisation. The two adults among these five are in ICU while the remaining three are all minors and are reportedly only mildly symptomatic and hence admitted in the regular Covid wards.

Since testing for Covid began in Sikkim on 28 Feb, 2020, a total of 39,184 samples have tested positive. While 37,969 patients have already made full recoveries, 749 people have migrated out after testing positive in Sikkim. The State has also lost 453 lives to the virus.

In continuation of the vaccination drive, a total of 60 children aged between 12 to 14 years received their CorBEvax jabs on Monday while 26 in the 15 to 18 age-group took their Covaxin shots. Similarly, 32 adults took their regular Covishield shots while 44 took their precautionary third dose yesterday.

As per the IDSP report, as of Monday, 97.32% of Sikkim’s adult population has already taken both doses of Covishield, while 94.68% of the 15 to 18 year olds have taken at least the first dose of Covaxin while 78.96% in this age-group is fully vaccinated. While 74.48% of the 12 to 15 age-group has taken at least the first dose of CorBEvax, 59.72% of this segment has already taken the second dose as well. Similarly, 38,727 adults, including healthcare and frontline workers, have taken the precautionary third dose as well.
