320 paddlers to take part in Alexius Dhungel Memorial TT C’ship

GANGTOK, 15 Dec: The first edition of Late Alexius Dhungel Memorial Table Tennis Championship 2021 has drawn an encouraging participation of 320 paddlers from different parts of the State.

The three-day long championship is being organised by Sikkim Table Tennis Club [STTC], Gangtok from 17 to 19 Dec here at indoor gymnasium hall of Paljor Stadium. Chief Minister PS Tamang is scheduled to inaugurate the championship on 17 Dec.

Addressing a press conference here today, STTC president, Karma Bhutia mentioned that the club is now all set to organise a major state-level table tennis championship in the State after lockdowns induced by the pandemic.

The participants are also very excited to play in the championship after a long gap, he said further informing that participants from outside Gangtok will reach the venue tomorrow and will be accommodated in the sports hostels in Paljor Stadium complex. He mentioned that the CM has consented to inaugurate the championship on 17 Dec.

Mr Bhutia mentioned that students from 32 schools and colleges will be participating in the championship which will follow strict COVID-19 protocols.

Cash prizes will be provided to winners in men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and trophies in veterans category, while winners in cadet to junior categories will get ply and rubber.

For further promotion and development of table tennis, STTC also plans to organise a coaching camp for young players and an inter-departmental table tennis championship next year.

The press conference was also addressed by general secretary JigmiShenga and member MandiraGurung of STTC.
