Agri Minister visits Wisconsin dairy farms
Wisconsin, 05 May (IPR):
In continuation of visit to USA, the Minister LokNath Sharma along with his team visited the Dairy Land of USA, Wisconsin, wherein the team had a series of meetings with the organic farmers who shared their success stories and also visited the various dairy farms, vegetable farms and organic fields.
The delegationled by the Minister, comprising of CEO SOFDA, Dr S Anbalagan, CEO-SSOCA, SudhirGiri visited the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Madison where the team was welcomed byBureau Director of Export and Business Development Bureau, Mr Mark,Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. The meeting was also attended by the Kara Kasten Olson and Andrew Bernhardt- Organic Specialist of Wisconsion Department of Agriculture.
Minister LokNath Sharma gave an overall picture of the organic Sector in Sikkim and discussed about opportunities of possible tie-up between Wisconsin and the Sikkim Government. He shared the ideas of investment in agro tourism in Sikkim and its future prospective for the socio-economic development of the state in detail.
Mr Andrew working as an organic research expert informed about the sustainable organic farming and its benefits and value addition to the farmers in long run. MrAndrew also talked about the farmers support center wherein all the financial as well as motivational support is provided by the team on 24/7 basis to encourage and help farmers in the time of need.
Mr Mark appreciated the initiative taken by the State Government in the agriculture, education, tourism and health sector. Mr Mark further added that the processed food has a wider scope to strengthen the business strategy of Sikkim in US market as such same can be the area of focus to flourish.
The delegation also visited the University of Agriculture, Wisconsin wherein meeting was scheduled with Dr Erin Silva. The pest and disease problem in large cardamom being faced by the farmers cultivating large cardamom was also discussed with Ms. Erin.
