Summit Report

Gangtok, 22 Jun:

Badminton Association of Sikkim [BAS] is all set to roll out its Badminton Calendar with a curtain raiser event, the All Sikkim Mixed Team Championship, scheduled to be held on 25 and 26 June here at the Paljor Stadium indoor hall.

A total of 16 teams from across the state will be participating in the two-day event.

A BAS press release issued by its vice-president [Tournament & Events], DS Kunwar, informs that after a setback of almost two years due to the pandemic, the executive members of BAS had called on Chief Minister PS Tamang to apprise him about the future programs of the association in their endeavour to develop and promote the game in Sikkim right from the grass-root level.

The release adds that the CM assured complete support and extended financial support for this curtain raiser event besides earmarking additional budget provisions for BAS activities for the coming year.

The curtain-raiser event will have five games consisting of the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles to be played in a knock out basis and the semi-finals and finals are scheduled to be played on 26 June.

The release states that it has been encouraging to witness the rapid growth in the number of associations and Clubs in the state.

“This curtain raiser event is therefore an introductory program for all the clubs and associations and help them to prepare for the series of events scheduled for the calendar year 2022-23 which includes the Ranking Tournament for the sub juniors, Juniors and Seniors along with the Zonal selection and State Championship and the Masters Open for the veterans,” the release adds.

The association also plans to organize invitational tournaments with the various district associations and the much-awaited Jorethang Premier Badminton League - JPBL-3.

The release adds that the calendar of events set for the state is based on the calendar released by Badminton Association of India to get players ready for various zonal and National tournaments to be hosted by BAI.
