Gangtok, 07 Dec:

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) installed "Smart Rn Duo" a Radon based seismic detector used for earthquake prediction at Kanchendzonga Management block of Sikkim University, Gangtok, on 26 Oct, 2021.

This was informed by Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University, Professor Avinash Khare, at a press conference on Tuesday.

Sikkim is situated in a seismic zone and in view of this the installation of 'Smart Rn Duo' is very important to avoid the damage of properly and to protect lives in advance. Till now, total 62 such Smart detectors have been successfully installed in different regions of the country and for the first time Sikkim also has such advanced technology which will give an early forecast of an earthquake. But this is in its experimental stage, said Mr Khare.

Talking about the working process of this technology, Manzil Darnal, Civil Engineer of Sikkim University, informs that this machine works with solar energy, having small Sim card installed inside it which continuously collects data of the fluctuations of flow of Radon gas emission from Earth's crust and the data is automatically sent to the head office in Mumbai.

This data can help predict earthquakes in the region in advance, Mr Darnal claimed.
