Blooming Sikkim cleans up and plants at Gyalshing College campus

In its ongoing state-wide mass plantation and cleanliness drive, Blooming Sikkim carried out a two-day long cleanliness and plantation drive at Sikkim Government College, Gyalshing, over the weekend.

On the first day of the drive on Saturday, Blooming Sikkim members carried out a cleanliness drive in and around the college campus, which was followed by a plantation drive in which 200 saplings were planted in the campus on Sunday, informs a press release from the organisation.

The release informs that this was the third event of the ongoingBlooming Sikkim initiative being undertaken across the State through the monsoons. The initiative had kicked-off with a plantation drive at Shipthang Primary School and the second event was held in KabiLungtsok.

Only saplings of indigenous species are being used in the plantation drive, covering the spectrum from flowering to fruit-bearing plants like guava, avocado, Rhododendron, Cherry, peach, hibiscus etc, the release adds.

Blooming Sikkim has thanked the Forest Department for supplying saplings for the plantation drives.

This initiative at Gyalshing College was held in collaboration with college authorities. An adhoc body of Blooming Sikkim for Gyalshing district was also constituted over the weekend and the office bearers and new members handed over thermembership certificates. More than 50 students from the college joined Blooming Sikkim over the two days, it is informed.

The release adds that as has been the practise, Blooming Sikkim members also adopted five saplings each.

The drive was also joined by the Dean of Student Affairs of Gyalshing College, ArchanaTamang along with Assistant Professor JigdelNamgyal Bhutia, Accounts clerk PadamBahadurRai and other staff of the college, the release details. The organisation further thanked Assistant Professor of Gyalshing college,Pema L Lepcha, who is also the coordinator of Blooming Sikkim for the district for helping and making his best effort in spreading wings organization.

The release further informs that Blooming Sikkim's online plantation drive is also underway and many have joined the drive. The organisation has invited the general public to visit its Facebook and Instagrampages and join the online campaign.
