CM lays foundation stone ofthree projects in West Sikkim

Chumbong, 24 Feb: Chief Minister, PS Tamang laid the foundation stone of three important projects under the Soreng Chakhung constituency in West Sikkim, which are the Block Administrative Center

at Chumbung, Industrial Training Institute building at Chumbong and the Center for Excellence at

Chakhung. Terming the day as historic, the CM thanked all the people of Soreng Chakhung on behalf of

the Sikkim government for supporting him. He also thanked Mahendra P. Lama, Economic Advisor

to the Government of Sikkim. He recalled the beginning of his journey into politics from Soreng

Chakhung in 1994 when he contested elections at the age of 24. “Throughout my political journey people of Soreng Chakhung have blessed me and now I am the Chief Minister. But I am still the same person I was in 1994.” he said. The Sikkim government's vision is to set up an education centre

in each constituency, informed the CM. He requested Mahindra P. Lama to take a look at

the Centre for Excellence project in order to make it more effective. He talked about the government’s decision to provide 50 MBBS seats in Sikkim Manipal University free of cost to the underprivileged

from next year onwards. He mentioned the Chief Minister’s Meritorious Scholarship scheme and also talked about the Gyalshing college construction. Education Minister, Kunga Nima Lepcha said that the Centre for Excellence project is being constructed in Soreng Chakhung as West Sikkim is lagging

behind in development. “The project will help in the overall development of the state. Intellectuals

from home and abroad will come to the centre enabling Sikkim’s students to compete in the world,” he stated. The centre, which is being built at a cost of around Rs 900 crore, will be able to accommodate 4,000 students including those from abroad, he informed. The project will also provide employment

to locals and support the tourism sector as well. Economic Advisor to the Government of Sikkim, Mahendra P. Lama, said that the Centre for Excellence is the heart of self-reliant India. He lauded the

government for bringing about change in the state. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Education Minister Kunganima Lepcha, Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, Agriculture Minister, Loknath Sharma,

Transport Minister, Sanjit Kharel, Urban Development Minister, Arun Upreti, Power Minister, MN Sherpa, Roads and Bridges Minister, Samdup Lepcha, MLA, Bishnu Khatiwada, MLA, Sunita Gajmer, MLA, Em Prasad Sharma, Political Secretary to CM, Jacob Khaling, and Chairpersons of various Departments.
