Covid breaks into Sikkim’s jails18 UNDERTRIALS TEST POSITIVE AT BOOMTAR DISTJAIL,
Namchi:19th December 2020: The covid infection has reached District Prison in Boomtar, Namchi South Sikkim too. The first case of Covid positive in District Prison Boomtar in Namchi came to light on December 8 when an inmate of the prison tested positive. Till today as per the update eighteen inmates of the prison have tested positive and all are males, altogether 143 samples from the prison including the staff members of the prison and inmates were taken for testing which also had all primary contacts. The positive cases which was found among the inmates have been isolated in a separate cell and the entire prison premises has been sanitised, while all 18 Covid positive inmates has no comorbidity. The Medical Officer concerned from District Hospital Namchi visited the prison and examined and counseled all the positive inmates and other staff members also, the staff nurse of the prison has also been instructed on all the precautionary measures to be taken. All eighteen cases are asymptomatic and all are fine, the medical team from District Hospital Namchi visited the prison on December 18 and after the necessary initiatives of counseling and sensitization the needful materials like masks, gloves, PPE kits and others were also provided to the prison authority. As a precautionary measure the new inmate will be placed under two weeks quarantine and then will be sent to the cell. Talking on the matter the District Collector South M Bharani Kumar IAS said that he will visit the District Prison Boomtar very soon to take stock of the condition.
