Covid spike continues in Sikkim, active load reaches 50

Summit Report

Gangtok, 05 Jul:

The number of active cases of Covid-19 in Sikkim reached 50 on Tuesday with eight new infections recorded in the last 24 hours. This is the highest number of active cases in the State in over four months. The last time that Sikkim had more than 50 active cases was on 01 March, 2022. What remains reassuring meanwhile is that while 49 of the Covid patients are either asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms, only one patient is down with moderate symptoms and none has a severe infection.

The daily numbers, while still low, have been recording new infections consistently since 07 June last month when Sikkim ended its over 10-day run of being Covid-free with no active cases in the State.

The eight new cases recorded in the Daily Report of Covid-19 in Sikkim released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of Health Department on Tuesday morning, came in at a daily test positivity rate of 5.6%, picked up from the screening of 142 samples in the past 24 hours.

All the eight cases were recorded in East Sikkim where 130 of the 142 samples were screened. While no samples were tested in West Sikkim, the three samples in South and the nine in North Sikkim returned negative for Covid today.

Out of the eight new cases, four were picked up in RT-PCR screening of 71 samples and four in rapid antigen testing of 71 samples.

The tally of the confirmed cases of Covid-19 recorded here in the past two years has now reached 39,264.

Of the 50 Covid patients in the State, eight are admitted in hospital, none in the ICU, and one in the Covid HDU ward on Oxygen support.
