Covid spike continues with 8 new cases in Sikkim

The number of active cases of Covid-19 in Sikkim reached 23 on Tuesday with eight fresh cases reported here in the past 24 hours. These new cases were picked up from the screening of 122 samples at a daily test positivity rate of 6.6%, the highest in recent times.

The tally of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Sikkim since testing began here around two years back has now reached 39,218.

As per the Daily Report of Covid-19 in Sikkim released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of Health Department, while three of the new cases were detected in RT-PCR screening of 64 samples, five were recorded in rapid antigen testing of 58 samples.

All the eight cases were registered in East Sikkim where 116 of the tests were conducted while the three samples each screened in West and South districts returned negative. No samples were screened in North Sikkim in the past 24 hours.

Also over the same period, one Covid patient made a full recovery and was discharged from home isolation taking Sikkim’s count of recovered cases to 37,988.

Although infections have gone up, no Covid deaths were reported in the State in the past 24 hours and the death toll continues to hold at 453.

As per the IDSP report, all the 23 active cases are either asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. The one severe infection reflected in the Covid Report till yesterday has since recovered enough to get discharged from ICU.

That said, there are six Covid patients currently in hospital, four of them admitted in the past 24 hours.

In continuation of the Covid vaccination drive, Sikkim administered 68 doses of CorBEvax to children aged between 12 to 14 years and 67 doses of Covaxin to those in the 15 to 18 years age-group on Monday. Similarly, 49 adults took their regular Covishield shots and 419 more received their precautionary third dose.
