District Level Junior Olympics concludes, 1349 students participate

GANGTOK, 15 Mar: The closing ceremony of the district-level 1st Inter School Junior Olympic Games 2020-21 under ‘Sports for Peace and Development’ Vertical of Khelo India for East District was held

here at Paljor Stadium on Monday. The week-long event, which started on 09 March, was organized

by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim and sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, government of India. The closing ceremony had Chairperson Sikkim Khadi& Village Industries Board, Chung Chung Bhutia as the chief guest, while Advisor to Sports & Youth Affairs

Department, MN Subba was present as the guest of honour. The chief guest and guest of honour handed over medals and certificates to winners in different sports disciplines. The closing function

also witnessed the final match of U-17 boys football between Pakyong and Ranka. In a nail-biting

final match,Pakyong edged past Ranka in a tie-breaker 3-2. Sports & Youth Affairs Department Deputy

Director [East], Lalita Chettri mentioned that 1349 athletes from different schools of eleven Blocks of East District had participated in U-14 and U-17 boys & girls categories of the event. She informed that

there were eight sports disciplines in U-17 boys & girls and six sports disciplines in U-14 boys and

girls held at six different venues in and around the capital. There are 628 medalists in the district level

and shortlisted teams and athletes would represent the district in the upcoming state-level competition in their respective discipline, she informed. “We have also prepared a list of talented and promising athletes in different disciplines in this district-level competition, even those who have not been able to

make it to the state-level competitions to provide them exposure and opportunities in the upcoming

competitions,” the Deputy Director said. Likewise, SYA Department Deputy Director [coaching], Zigmee Yodzer Lepcha mentioned that 267 athletes in U-14 girls, 325 in U-14 boys, 365 in U-17 girls and 392 in U-17 boys had participated in the district-level competition.
