Film making discussed on second day of national workshop at SGC Namchi

The second day of the three-day national workshop was organized by the department of Journalism &Mass Communication at SGC Namchi today with the intension of providing students with various aspects of filmmaking and making them understand films in different perspectives.

A press release informs that three resource persons widely acclaimed in the area of filmmaking conducted the workshop to provide students the knowledge they require in the subject of filmmaking.

The three speakers from different parts of the country specializing in filmmaking delivered their talks in two technical sessions distributed into four different talks. The three eminent resource persons were Prof. Shayaml Karmakar, former Head of the Editing Department of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Hitesh Liya from SRFTI, Kolkata, and Saurav Sarkar, an independent filmmaker, director, and social educator.

The theme for the day was ‘Filmmaking’, where the speakers discussed and explained the theoretical as well as the technical aspects of filmmaking. The speakers screened their films and explained their contents and their meanings. Prof. Shyamal deliberated on the role of sound and picture in cinema and various essential elements that are required in the process of filmmaking.

Sourav Sarkar discussed the characterization of films while he explained the meaning of experiencing the films rather than just watching them for the purpose of entertainment as films are the strongest medium of communication and they possess messages and can be understood in various different ways.

Hitesh Liya discussed how aesthetics work in films likethe rules of composition, and the rules of light. He asserted that visualization and planning of films are the most important aspects of filmmaking.

“Don’t just watch films instead try to learn what has gone behind making of the films,” he suggested to the participants.

The three-day national workshop titled “Visual Reproduction of Events through; Direction, Filmmaking, Photography & News Reporting” is a part of ‘A Month-long Academic Meet’ and it is sponsored by RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan).

Principal, SGC, Namchi Dr. Deeepak Tiwari is a patron, Head of the department Cherilla W. Bhutia is convenor, Mahendra PD Gurung, Organising Secretary, Lokesh Chettri, Dikila Bhutia, and Bindya Rai as the executive members of the organising committee and Rabika Gurung, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics hosted the day’s event.
