Former Minister Mohan Gurung retires from politics

Veteran politician and former Minister, Mohan Gurung from Yuksam under Yuksam-Tashiding constituency, West Sikkim, has announced his retirement from politics.

Mr Gurung made the announcement on his 70th birthday on 15 October.

In a press release, he informs that he is retiring from politics considering his age and his desire to pursue the path of spirituality.

Mr Gurung has thanked former Chief Minister Sancha Man Limboo for providing him an opportunity to work for the state and the Sikkimese people as their representative. He has also extended his gratitude to the former Chief Ministers; Late LD Kazi, and Late Nar Bahadur Bhandari. He also thanked former Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling for giving him a political platform to work for the wellbeing of the Sikkimese people.

He has further thanked all those who were an integral part of his long political journey and stood by him.

Mohan Gurung had started his political career from Jana-Andolan of 1973 and under the leadership of Nar Bahadur Khatiwada he contested the 1979 assembly election from Yuksam constituency. He lost the election to former Chief Minister Sancha Man Limboo. However, Mohan Gurung held the post of a Minister in the state cabinet under the Sancha Man Limboo-led government in 1994. For many decades, Mohan Gurung was actively involved in the state's politics and held various portfolios in regional political parties of the state.
