Gangtok gets aRs 930 lakh indoor sports arena
Gangtok, 27 Oct:
An indoor sports arena, developed at the cost of Rs 930 lakh on the top floor of the Gangtok Municipal Corporation office here at Deorali, was inaugurated by Chief Minister PS Tamang today.
In his technical report, Additional Chief Town Planner, Gary Chophel, detailed that the indoor sports arena was a “mega project” of the GMC, work on which had begun on 21 January, 2020. The complex is spread over 30,140 sqft and was contracted to Manokamna Enterprises.
The arena has two wings - the northern side opening into a main court and a three-storied multi games facility on the southern side of the building.
The ground floor has two large halls of 1,000 sqft each designated for table tennis with automated tables; a yoga room of 1,000 sqft and also an administrative office with security and surveillance and staff rooms to operate and manage the facility.
The upper level includes a fitness centre and a cafeteria overlooking the court.
The facility also has a public gallery with seating capacity of 550 people overlooking the main court and the third level holds two state-of-the-art cricket batting facility with an automated bowling machine.
There is also provision to house new room games like Teqball and other games of similar dimension.
The Additional Chief Town Planner further informed that a hallmark of the area is the main court with a floor space of 125 ft x 66 fttotaling 8,250 sqftwhich is the heart of the indoor arena.
The play court has a playing surface made of Maple wood to meet international specifications and standards and can also be used for badminton as the hall clears maximum height of 46 ft in the centre. He added that the court can host all kinds of games and was especially suited for basketball and futsal.
The project has been totally designed, supervised and executed completely by in-house architects and engineers of GMC with the cooperation of the contractors.
After inaugurating the facility, the CM toured the complex.
In his address, the CM congratulated the people of Gangtok on having received this new infrastructure and also congratulated the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councilors and officials of GMC and former Mayor and councilors for their joint effort and hard-work in creating this new sports infrastructure in the capital.
He also informed that the project at Old West Point School area was part of the beautification of Gangtok on PPP mode, undertaken, he said, after consulting drivers and other stakeholders. This Rs 300 crore project includes a park and other facilities and four stories of parking.
Speaking on the project at Hospital Dara, he informed that the project was part of the Smart City project which was already awarded to a company by the previous government without any clearance and meeting other formalities. He added that the present government had not scrapthe project and instead gave continuity to developmental works in the state.
Minister to Urban Development Department, ArunUpreti,also addressed the function as did Gangtok Mayor Nell BahadurChettri.
The function also included a =felicitation of the CM by members of different football clubs of the State and handing over of a lifetime membership to Aakraman Football Club to the CM. On the occasion, the CM has also handed over Commendation Certificates to the project team and contractors.
