GJM president Bimal Gurung begins indefinite hunger strike

Darjeeling, 25 May:

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha [GJM] president, Bimal Gurung began his indefinite hunger strike against GTA elections in Darjeeling Hill stoday.

A few days back, Mr Gurung had threatened to sit on hunger strike if the State Government went ahead with the GTA election in the Hills.

Mr Gurung started his hunger strike at Singamari infront of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha party office today.

Addressing the press today, he said that GJM had written to the Chief Minister of West Bengal requesting that the GTA elections be put on hold until the government fulfills promises made to GJM like ST status for 11 Gorkha communities.

“Since the GTA was being run without any election since 2017 through an administrator or a nominated head, we had requested the state government to hold the next election for GTA after resolving the issues under the MOA of 2011. And till yesterday our youth wing was on relay hunger strike at our Singmari party office. But yesterday after the all party meeting it was clear that the State Government will conduct GTA election in Hills without fulfilling our condition,” said Mr Gurung.

The state government should conduct GTA election after fulfilling GJM’s demands, he added.

He also appealed to all political andnon-political organisations to come forward and protest against the GTA election in the Hills for the Gorkha community.
