Govt orders fresh COVID-19 restrictions

Gangtok, 18 Mar: The State Government has ordered fresh restrictions in Sikkim for containment of COVID-19. In an order issued today, the Home Department has imposed restrictions on vehicular movement as well as business establishments at night. Meanwhile, Chief Minister, PS Tamang, had announced the restrictions on Wednesday itself after attending a video conference with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The conference, attended by Chief Ministers of all states including the heads of the Union Territories, had been called to discuss the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in the country. Except for emergency purposes, no vehicular movement will be allowed after 10:30 pm till 6 am. These restrictions will not apply to commercial goods vehicles including LCVs and vehicles on emergency duty.

All commercial establishment including restaurants, bars, night clubs, discos, pubs, gyms, etc will have to close by 10 pm. Special drives will be carried out in schools, institutions and establishments

to ensure that students, employees and custormers continue to follow social distancing norms and wearing of masks. The order also states that the police will increase vigil in this regard and “strictly enforce the norms in public places.” The Chief Minister has appealed to the people of Sikkim to regularly

wear masks and continue to follow social distancing and Covid protocols to remain safe from the Disease. Daily Covid cases in Sikkim, meanwhile, have been on a steady decline. Today, for instance, the state reported only two new cases and yesterday, three fresh cases were reported in the State.
