Holiday slowdown in testing notwithstanding, falling positivity & low severity provide welcome releif

Summit Report

Gangtok, 03 Feb:

The VRD-Labs in which RT-PCR tests are carried out were apparently on a Sonam Lochhar slowdown yesterday, but even though fewer samples were tested for Covid yesterday, the fact that the test positivity rate remained low, severe infections even more so and Sikkim going two days without any Covid deaths offers welcome relief to the State as it negotiates the third wave.

As per the Daily Report of Covid-19 in Sikkim released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of Health Department, a total of 905 samples were screened for SARS CoV2 yesterday, 782 via Rapid Antigen Testing and only 122 by RT-PCR in the two VRD Labs here.

From these 905 samples, a total of 62 returned positive - 22 in RT-PCR and 39 via RAT. The daily test positivity rate of 6.8% is among the lowest recorded in the third wave, and made more significant by the fact that new hospitalisations were also the lowest of the current wave at 12. Over the same 24 hours, 18 Covid patients were discharged from hospital after their symptoms were brought under check and sent to home isolation.

For those keeping track of hospitalisation, the one under-18 year old admitted into the ICU STNM Hospital yesterday, has also recovered enough to be shifted from ICU.

Of the 655 active Covid cases in the State at present, over 95%, 623, are either asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms, 13 have moderate symptoms and 19 have presented severe symptoms.

There are 76 Covid patients in hospital at present, a number that has been consistently dropping over the past week, 19 of whom are in ICU, one of whom, admitted yesterday at CRH-Tadong, is under-18 years of age.

As per the IDSP report, two of the patients in ICU are on ventilator support at present, while another 15 are on isolation beds with Oxygen support.

Meanwhile, of the 62 new cases, 34 were recorded in East district, 26 in West, two in South and none in North Sikkim.
