International Olympic Day celebrated in Paljor Stadium


Gangtok, 23 Jun:

Sikkim Olympic Association [SOA] celebrated the International Olympic Day 2022 on the theme, ‘Together for a Peaceful World’ by honouring national medalists from Sikkim and with sporting activities here at indoor gymnasium hall of Paljor Stadium on Thursday.

The day-long celebration started with the Minister Sports & Youth Affairs Department, KN Lepcha cutting a cake to mark the International Olympic Day at SOA office at Paljor Stadium complex this morning. Also present was MP LokSabha,Indra Hang Subba. The ceremony was also attended by the president KuberBhandari and other executive members of SOA and representatives and athletes from different state sports associations.

At the onset of the programme, the message of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang was read out for the gathering. In his message, the Chief Minister expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all the sportspersons of Sikkim who have contributed to diverse disciplines and represented the state in various sporting events including the Olympics over the years. He appealed to the sportspersons and enthusiasts to get involved in sports not only for physical and mental well-being but also for social cohesion, tolerance, and team spirit in order to achieve goodwill amongst fellow humans.

In his short address, the Minister mentioned that sports is a great medium to promote brotherhood, love and peace in the world by uniting people. He said Sikkim has also joined the world in celebrating the International Olympic Day with sporting activities across the State to promote love and peace. He asserted that everyone needs to come together for the further promotion of games and sports in the State. He also congratulated SOA for working tirelessly for the promotion of games and sports by supporting sports associations and local athletes of Sikkim. The Minister congratulated and expressed best wishes of International Olympic Day to all sports associations, clubs and athletes of Sikkim.

The Ministers and other guests also visited the blood donation camp organised by SOA in collaboration with Blood Bank of STNM hospital at conference hall Paljor Stadium. Athletes and members of different sports association donated their blood during the camp.

The day-long celebration of International Olympic Day witnessed exhibition matches in badminton, table tennis, boxing, taekwondo, karate, kickboxing, wushu, kabaddi, chess, weight lifting and basketball at indoor hall of Paljor Stadium.

On the occasion, SOA also felicitated national medalists from Sikkim for making Sikkim proud by winning medals and laurels in their respective disciplines. MP LokSabha,Indra Hang Subba presented the Letters of Appreciation to the national medalists.

Addressing the gathering of athletes and representatives of different sports associations, MrSubba congratulated SOA and sports associations for working together for promotion and development of sports culture in the State and supporting athletes to take them to the higher level. He also congratulated local athletes for their outstanding performances in the exhibition matches and expressed best wishes for their future endeavors.

MrSubba mentioned that the State government has been working for the development of sports and welfare of sportspersons of Sikkim on priority basis by providing the best infrastructure and facilities. He encouraged everyone to work together to support the efforts of the State government to transform Sikkim into a sports hub of the country. He urged athletes to give their best to achieve the desired level in their respective discipline.

Earlier, the celebration started with the welcome address by SOA president,KuberBhandari and ended with vote of thanks by SOA general secretary Jas LallPradhan.
