Summit Report

Gangtok, 04 Aug:

Covid claimed one more life in Sikkim with a 49-year-old Covid-positive lady from Pakyong passing away at STNM Hospital today. This was the 473rd Covid fatality in Sikkim.

The sobering news of another Covid fatality notwithstanding, the sweep of the virus, from what the numbers suggest, is waning in Sikkim. As per the Daily Report of Covid-19 in Sikkim released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of Health Department on Thursday morning, Sikkim continues to record more daily recoveries among Covid patients than fresh infections. The present wave is also reporting fewer severe infections than previous waves, and health officials have informed that most of the fatalities among Covid-positive patients were being cause by pre-existing co-morbid conditions.

Today, for instance, against the 111 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours, Sikkim reported 185 recoveries. As per the IDSP report, the 111 new cases came in at a daily positivity rate of 10.81% from the 1,026 samples screened in the previous 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 28 were registered in Gangtok district, 10 in Pakyong, 16 in Gyalshing, 18 in Soreng, 37 in Namchi and 02 in Mangan district. Among the districts, Gyalshing returned the highest daily TPR of 16.32%. The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 recorded in Sikkim in the past two years has now reached 42,492.

The number of active cases in Sikkim has now dropped to 692, of whom 45 are currently admitted in hospital. The discharge of Covid patients from hospital and into home isolation after their symptoms have been brought under control is also now comparatively higher than previous weeks. In the past 24 hours, 12 Covid patients were discharged from hospital, the IDSP report informs.

Of the 45 Covid patients in hospital, 06 are admitted in ICU and another six in the HDU wards while the rest are under observation in the regular Covid wards. Nine of the admitted patients are under 18 years of age, none of them in ICU.

In continuation of Covid vaccination drive in the State, 2,219 people received their precautionary third dose of Covishield on Wednesday and another 80 adults took their regular Covishield jabs. Likewise, 184 children aged between 12 to 14 years took their CorBEvax shots and 43 in the 15 to 18 years age-group received Covaxin jabs in Sikkim yesterday.
