Rains pour havoc on South Sikkim

Heavy downpour across the State since the night of 18 October has also caused a series of damages affecting crops, landed property and private houses in South Sikkim, an IPR Deptt press release informs.

Major damages have occurred at Tirikhola, Rong under Namchi block.

Relief materials have been provided to the victims who have been asked to shift to safer locations for a few days considering the weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department for the State.

Also today, 25 vehicles ferrying tourists were stranded along the Melli-Manpur stretch and the safely evacuated and helped across the Melli Check Post. Police personnel also helped in clearing the road, the release informs.

Another lot of between 30 to 40 vehicles are still stuck near Melli, the release adds.

Road clearance is underway despite active slides.

District Collector, South, M Bharani, has directed the concerned SDMs and Revenue Surveyors to submit reports on damages by 3PM Wednesday.

Road connectivity across the district has been severely hampered. The Wok-Namchi axis remains completely blocked while the Namthang-Namchi road via Bhanjyang was blocked at Namchi View Point and eventually cleared. Narak Jhora was also blocked earlier in the day. The Jorethang-Namchi road is also blocked at several places as is the Namchi-Melli NH 710 highway.

The District Collector has directed all members of the South District Disaster Management Authority to remain on high alert, especially officials of the Roads & Bridges Department, who have been directed to station men & machinery at disaster prone sites, the release informs.
