Recoveries outnumber new Covid cases for fourth time this week

Sikkim registered more Covid recoveries than new cases again today, for the fourth time this week, bringing some comfort to a state ravaged by a runaway sweep of the virus' second wave which has kept Sikkim on tenterhooks for the past month and a half.

As per the 'Daily Report of Covid-19' released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project of the Health Department released at 8AM this morning collating Covid statistics of the previous 24 hours, 277 more formerly Covid-positive patients in home isolation have been discharged. Over the same 24-hour period, Sikkim detected 147 new infections.

Since Sunday, 07 June, Sikkim has recorded a total of 979 new cases while the number of recoveries over the same period has been n encouraging 1,359.

Sikkim’s count of recovered cases of COVID-19 so far now stands 13,655 while its cumulative tally of confirmed cases is 18,090. There are currently 3,908 active cases of Covid in the State, 3,724 of whom are either asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms and are hence kept in facility of home isolation.

Of all the active cases, there are only 184 with symptoms severe enough to require medical intervention and are admitted in hospitals here, 26 of them admitted only today. There are also 27 Covid patients in ICU.

The 147 new cases were picked up from the testing of 1,399 samples in different parts of the State on Thursday giving Sikkim a daily test positivity rate of 10.5%.

While 97 of the cases were found in RT-PCR testing of 771 samples, 50 more persons tested positive for COVID-19 in rapid antigen testing of 626 samples.

Of the new cases, 57 were registered in East District, 21 in West District, 42 in South District and 27 in North District.

On a sombre note, Sikkim lost two more lives to Covid and the COVID death toll here has increased to 281. Both the COVID deaths were reported from STNM Hospital.
