Sakewa celebrations begin in South Sikkim

Sakewa celebration has begun in South Sikkim with the All Sikkim Men's Volleyball Tournament which started in Chemchey today. The final match of the tournament will be held on 24 Dec during the main Sakewa Festival celebration.

Sakewa Festival 2021 (Udhauli) organized by Chemchey block level committee of Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh (AKRS) has commenced with cultural presentations, traditional tools and ornaments display, and Kirat literature stalls prepared by the locals of different GPUs under Poklok-Kamrang constituency.

Fourteen teams from different parts of Sikkim will play knockout matches for eight days before the final match on 24 Dec.

General secretary of AKRS, Lalit Rai said that the eleven-day pre-celebration of Sakewa Festival 2021 includes the volleyball tournament, cultural shows, and Kirat stalls.

Mr Rai also narrated the history of Sakung Saya Mangkhim situated in Chemchey where the fireplace rituals were performed by mangpas (Rai priest), before the program.

The chief guest on the first day of the Sakewa Festival 2021 was Chairman of UDHD, KB Rai who was accompanied by the general secretary of AKRS, Lalit Rai, IHCAE Administrator, Rajiv Rai, Chairperson of Tourism Department, Phigu Bhutia, elders of the Village, panchayat members of the GPU, PHSC in-charge and staff, pastors, mangpa, and the villagers.
